Thanksgiving, The Founding Fathers and the Death of America

Happy Thanksgiving from The Daily Retard! I wanted to get this post out yet today rather than tomorrow in hopes you readers will enjoy it, and think about it, as you gather to celebrate tomorrow. You will find the “voice” of today’s post different than most of them- that is for a reason. Mostly because as it relates to the context of this specific holiday- there is nothing funny about what is happening. It’s damned serious, maybe more serious than anything other than actual real “life and death”, and I decided to treat it as such.
Now, we all know the happy story about the Pilgrims landing at Plymouth Rock in 1620, half of them dying the first winter, the Indians (we call them Indians here, because most of us in 2009 are as native to America as they were) teaching them to farm, the bountiful harvest, the huge feast, etc…. That all makes great fodder for grade school kids and pretty colored things to hang on the refrigerator. But as is so often the case with history, it’s nowhere NEAR the entire story. And as is also so often the case, the whole story is MUCH uglier and less palatable than what we see in the cornucopias and Norman Rockwell paintings.
The following quote is taken from HSLDA: “In 1777, Congress issued its first Thanksgiving proclamation, declaring, ‘It is the indispensable Duty of all Men to adore the superintending Providence of Almighty God; to acknowledge with Gratitude their Obligation to him for Benefits received … . It having pleased him in his abundant Mercy … to smile upon us in the Prosecution of a just and necessary War, for the Defense and Establishment of our unalienable Rights and Liberties; particularly … to crown our Arms with most signal success … .’”
I also want to direct your attention to George Washington’s Thanksgiving Proclamation made in 1789, which you can read in full here. I want you to pay particular attention to the last part of this particular passage: ” Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me ‘to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:’”

Now, I want you readers to remember what the Pilgrims risked EVERYTHING for, and why the Revolutionary War was fought. I want you to take some time to reflect on the sacrifices these men and women made. In this modern-day life of cell phones, lattes, laptop computers and HDTVs it’s tough to even wrap your mind around, isn’t it? But I dare say, there are few things more important…. Some of the things our Founding Fathers were trying to escape sound awfully familiar don’t they? No freedom of speech? No freedom of religion? The right to keep and bear arms? Taxation without representation? An oppressive, tyrannical government? Few personal property rights and fewer personal liberties?
Did the colonists come here because they heard America was giving away health care? Cash4Clunkers? Money for houses? To elect a massive, elitist, centralized nanny state federal government and allow them to operate with impunity in complete disregard for it’s constituency? 99 weeks of unemployment benefits? Food stamps? Cash welfare payments? I think not. They came here because they believed so passionately in a human beings right to be FREE from the encumberance of tyrannical, oppressive government they were willing to risk absolutely everything for the chance to live free. Did you read the passage above? “The Defense and Establishment of our unalienable Rights and Liberties”- I think there are few statements more powerful than that. If I were a better writer, I could likely prattle on in flowery prose, expanding on that statement and extrapolating it to withdraw more emotion. Sadly, I have not those skills and I will just allow the words to speak for themselves. They do a damned fine job without me.
Folks, America as we know her, as she has existed since 1776, is dying. She has been sick for a good while now, as Her citizens and leaders have moved further away from Her principles. There can be much debate as to where exactly the tide began to turn in her 233 year history. But the fact that we as a country are inching ever closer to EXACTLY what it is our forefathers sought to escape CANNOT be denied. We cannot continue to ignore what is happening to our great Country. In much the same way as we likely cannot pinpoint a single moment when the sickness began, we likely cannot predict an exact moment when She breathes her last breath. But be CERTAIN of this- that moment is inching ever closer. Every time an individual’s liberty is surrendered to the government, every time something is taken from an individual by the government and redistributed to another, each and every single time the leaders act in blatant disregard for the Constitution and the noble principles of out Founding Fathers She gets a little sicker. Is it too late? I honestly do not know.
I DO know this- it took a long time to get where we are today. It is NOT the result of a single, monumental action. It is the end result of many thousands of small actions, kind of a “death by 1000 papercuts”…. Inasmuch as it was not a single event that brought us to this point, I firmly believe it does NOT have to be a single event that will reverse the course. I am just a single blogger with the freedom (for as long as it is still allowed) to write and share my thoughts with anyone who chooses to read them (for as long as THAT is still free). I also know this- there ARE good people in this country, who believe it’s worth fighting for. And each one of us who believes and is willing to fight is a single voice to unite in a chorus, to begin to turn the tide, to heal the sickness and restore our great America to where She belongs.

  1. Happy Thanksgiving, Daily Retard.
This was a wonderful post. You explained the sad state of affairs in America today. Our founding fathers and other Patriots who died for our freedoms the last 233 years are spinning in their graves.

I think you “prattled on with flowery prose” very very wonderfully.
Everyone should keep to Pres. Washington’s’ intent of the holiday,
and Pray and Thank God for everything they enjoy, while they still have it.

  2. Another outstanding post, retard!!

No “flowery prose” needed. The facts speak for themselves. Hope you and yours have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

  3. There’s a good post up at Conservative Hideout 2.0 (my regular commenter named Matt) about the first Thanksgiving. You should check it out.

    Happy Thanksgiving.

@SB- I have seen that story and was almost gonna link to it from the post. So I shall link from the comments instead- it IS a very good one indeed!
    Here it is.

  5. I’m happy to have met you on here DR! And honored to read this SUPER post.
I just linked it on my blog! Should have done it last night, it’s a MUST read!
God Bless you, and God Bless America.

  6. I like your blog. I tried educating the ignorant masses on Facebook only to get moronic contradiction followed by left-wing propaganda. I guess it is true that if lies are repeated enough the masses will eventually believe it. I attribute the sad state of affairs to the decline in our school systems. It was a grand mistake to ever allow federal funding into public schools. In doing so, we forfeited our rights to control the content of education. Ever since, the government has attacked our values by subversively brainwashing our children.

  7. The Daily Retard Says:

You are ABSOLUTELY correct on the school system. The only thing I would add is that is has become less subversive and now on many occasions the brainwashing is not only outright and blatant, but tolerated AND encouraged. It absolutely amazes me- I have to buy a license to go fishing, but any liberal idiot is free to vote AND reproduce at will….

  8. America is dying? How about this, Native Americans HAVE died. This holiday is nothing more than a celebration of America at its best: a romanticization of Eurocentrism.
